One of the most searched questions by Indian medical aspirants is "Can I study MBBS abroad without NEET?" — and unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet about this topic. Some agents and fake consultancies mislead students into believing NEET is not required for MBBS abroad. This is dangerous misinformation.
NO — You cannot study MBBS abroad without NEET if you want to practice medicine in India. As per NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021, NEET qualification is mandatory for all Indian students taking MBBS admission in foreign universities from May 2018 onwards. Without NEET, your foreign medical degree will NOT be recognized in India.
In March 2019, the Medical Council of India (now NMC) passed an order making NEET compulsory for Indian students seeking medical education abroad. This was codified in the FMGL Regulations 2021. The reasons include ensuring minimum academic standards for Indian students going abroad, preventing unqualified students from getting medical degrees, protecting students from fraudulent universities, and maintaining quality standards for medical practice in India.
"Indian Citizens/Overseas Citizen of India intending to obtain primary medical qualification from any medical institution outside India, on or after May 2018, shall have to mandatorily qualify the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Admission to MBBS course. The result of NEET shall be valid for a period of three (3) years from the date of declaration of result."
This means: (1) NEET is mandatory — no exceptions for abroad admissions, (2) Your NEET score is valid for 3 years, (3) This applies to admissions from May 2018 onwards.
If you enroll in a foreign medical university without qualifying NEET, the consequences are severe:
You will NOT be allowed to appear for the FMGE/NExT licensing exam. This means you cannot get registered as a doctor in India — ever.
NMC and State Medical Councils will refuse to register you. Your 6 years of study and ₹20-40 Lakh investment will be wasted.
Without registration, you cannot legally practice medicine anywhere in India. This is a permanent disqualification.
6 years of your life and significant financial investment gone with no career outcome. This is the most tragic consequence.
Fact: It's not about the country's requirement — it's about NMC's requirement. Even if a foreign university admits you without NEET, India will NOT recognize your degree for practice. The requirement is from India's side, not the university's.
Fact: If you don't plan to return to India and want to practice in the country where you studied, you might not need NEET. However, most Indian students eventually want to return and practice in India. Additionally, getting a work visa and medical license in most countries is extremely competitive.
Fact: Any agent or consultancy promising MBBS abroad without NEET for Indian students is either misinformed or deliberately misleading you. This is a major red flag. Always verify with NMC's official website and choose a government-licensed consultancy like Medipedia.
Fact: Since 2018, NEET is mandatory for BOTH Indian and foreign medical admissions for Indian students. The NMC has made this abundantly clear in multiple notifications.
The good news? MBBS abroad is much more accessible than Indian private colleges for low NEET scorers. Here's why:
While Indian private colleges need 500+ NEET scores (and ₹50L+ fees), most foreign universities accept students with just a qualifying NEET score (130-150+). This means even students with modest scores can pursue MBBS abroad at ₹15-40 Lakh total cost. You just need to QUALIFY NEET — not top it.
Medipedia's advice: Don't waste time looking for "MBBS without NEET" shortcuts. Instead, focus on qualifying NEET with even a minimum score, and we'll help you find the best university within your budget. The qualifying cutoff is very achievable with proper preparation.
